I didn't discover this album until several years later either, but it is one of my all-time favorites. I have a special place in my heart for Rancid too.

Oh My God...screw Powerpoint.

Fun story yesterday, it was "Back to School" night at my son's school. His third grade teacher was going through her overly long Powerpoint presentation with a heavy dollop of animations thrown in (for fun and whimsy sake?), when she said that their big class tech project for later this year would be using Powerpoint. I pitied the computers at the side of the classroom as I briefly considered homeschooling my child.

The one area of discovery that I do still dabble in is around my current iteration of knowabout.it -- which is currently all about seeing what people are talking about over the last 24 hours...the service itself isn't really discovery as I think of it, but as you mention the stuff that comes out of digging into the conversations around each def. feels more like it...

Hey, Ben -

I'm always excited to see people building something new (and I support your stance on privacy), and I didn't mean to suggest that it was a half-assed undertaking, but rather a slightly different concern.

It may just be how I read the description, but when I saw Stack framed as a combination of the features that people use from different services, it strikes me as a really hard problem to take on: creating a coherent, cohesive experience is difficult enough, and if the functionality you're putting in needs to mirror stuff that that comes from a number of different contexts, the problem becomes exponentially more difficult in my view.

And then on customization I worry a little, because the greater the number of possible user configurations, the harder it is to know what an individual's experience of the service will be like, or predict how changes to the service might affect users.

Again, those certainly aren't reasons to not do it, just my reaction to what I read. :)

Thanks for the feedback whitneymcn, i get what you're saying. to clarify, "the most popular features of the existing networks" refers to the sharing and communication capabilities that people expect from a social network. We're not building a half-assed service here, it will have the ability to do what you do with facebook and more. BUT, and this is very important, it will always be opt-in. You choose what tools you want to use, and how public you want to be. Privacy is important, but it shouldn't get in the way of you being as public as you want to be. Our point of view is that the network should never take advantage of the user or their data, and I'm willing to make a legal contract with my users that actually protects their rights. I hope you'll support us, ben
